Types of Hair Transplants
Dr. Pearce offers three methods of hair transplantation and can help you decide which is the best option for you:
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): The original hair transplant method involves an incision at the donor area at the back of the scalp. This tissue strip is removed, and the hairs are dissected from the surrounding tissue to make small grafts placed in the areas lacking hair. This incision is great for men and women with long hair who do not wish to shave their heads. The incision typically heals into a fine line across the back of the scalp. It helps to obtain large amounts of grafts in a small area and helps to maintain the donor area for future hair transplants.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This manual procedure uses a handheld device that cores out each hair follicle leaving behind a small circular scar less than 1 mm in size. This procedure is an excellent option for anyone who prefers a short hairstyle on the back of their scalp, as the hair can be easily shaved down to one guard, reducing the visibility of the scars. This procedure does require shaving of the scalp to give the best results.
- ARTAS® iX Robotic Hair Restoration System: Robotic-assisted FUE with the ARTAS iXi device has revolutionized hair transplants by increasing the speed of the harvesting process. This cutting-edge tool incorporates AI technology alongside three advanced cameras that update its location 60 times per second, delivering precision and speed in harvesting grafts. Encompassing the entire procedure in a single device, the ARTAS iXi also excels at graft implantation. Dr. Pearce, the most experienced robotic hair transplant surgeon in Austin, TX, was the first to bring this technology to the area.
What is a Hair Transplant Like?
The first step in getting your hairline back is the initial consultation. Dr. Paul Pearce will learn about your goals and identify the underlying factors contributing to your hair loss. He will also discuss if you are a candidate for medical management to help improve your hair even further. Once you have been deemed a good candidate for a hair transplant, Dr. Pearce and his staff will schedule your pre-op visit and procedure date.
Your hair transplant day begins early. The meticulous and delicate procedure takes 6 – 8 hours in-office under local anesthesia and some light oral sedation. Dr. Pearce makes all of the sites for your hairline and performs the harvesting of your grafts, which makes his practice unique in the Austin, TX area. After harvesting, the grafts are implanted into the previously made incisions. Once the process is complete, you will be escorted to your ride home to begin recovery.
What is Recovery From A Hair Transplant Like?
Following your hair transplant, there will be some swelling for approximately 4 – 5 days. Dr. Pearce advises sleeping on your back 7 – 10 days after the procedure to ensure the grafts settle properly. Patients are also advised to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity during this period so the grafts are not dislodged.
Patients can shower from the first day after the transplant but must avoid the shower jets touching the grafts. Dr. Pearce ensures every patient receives proper post-hair transplant shower techniques before leaving. It's common to have scabs on the newly transplanted grafts for 10 – 14 days after the procedure, and some patients may experience a pink scalp for about 3 – 4 weeks post-op. After ten days post-op, patients can resume normal activities, including regular showering and sleeping.
Hair Transplant Reviews
I have been wanting to get hair transplant for a few years and was apprehensive with the success rate. What sold me to go with Dr Pearce, was his effective way to explain how procedure and the robot that he uses to precisely perform this procedure. I'm about 5 months into it and I have a nice front hairline already with my hair is starting to get thicker where I was going bald. I'm so happy with Pearce Plastic Surgery and would highly recommend anyone to go here.
