What is Liposuction?

Sometimes, no matter how much you diet and exercise, stubborn pockets of fat can prevent you from feeling completely confident in your body. Pearce Plastic Surgery offers the most advanced methods to effectively remove fat from areas of the body that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Lipo, or liposuction surgery, is a body reshaping procedure that reduces pockets of fat from the abdomen, back, bra roll, banana rolls, hips, thighs, and arms to create a slimmer appearance. This treatment can be combined to treat several areas. When we see you for your consultation at our Austin, TX office, Dr. Paul Pearce will assess the areas of your body you wish to address so you can reach your aesthetic goals. We want to help you look and feel the best you can be.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure with or without general anesthesia. We will discuss whether a general anesthetic is needed during your consultation. To loosen the fat and make suction easier, we create a punch-hole incision through the skin and insert a thin cannula. Once the desired amount of fat deposits has been removed, Dr. Pearce will seal the incision. You will then be taken to the recovery room, where the post-op team will manage your pain and care for your incisions until you are ready to be discharged.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Patients who are healthy, within 10 – 15 pounds of their body weight goal, and have no significant medical history are great candidates for liposuction. Patients who smoke or vape are at higher risk of complications from liposuction and are required to stop smoking 4 – 6 weeks before surgery and refrain from smoking 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. You may require further medical workup before surgery if you have medical conditions.

What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction surgically removes excess body fat to enhance body contours. The areas that can be treated with liposuction include, but are not limited to:

  • Chin and neck area: Double chin removal and improve the jawline
  • Abdomen and flanks: Create curves and sculpt the abs. It can also be used to remove love handles and muffin tops
  • Breasts: Removal of “side boob” fat
  • Hips: Eliminate squareness and improve the waistline
  • Outer, anterior, and inner thighs: To improve the proportion of the thighs to the knees and calves
  • Knees: Slim the knee area and improve the contours of the thighs and calves.
  • Arms: Decrease the size of the arms, and give the upper arms a more toned look
  • Back: Eliminate back rolls to create a more sculpted physique
How much fat can be removed during liposuction?

Most patients undergo liposuction with 3 – 4 liters of fat removed. Patients can have up to five liters of fat removed during surgery. For amounts exceeding five liters, Dr. Pearce insists on overnight monitoring in a specialized facility with nursing care for best safety practices.

Can liposuction be used to help me lose weight?

Liposuction is often mistaken as a weight loss procedure, as it is the most effective as a body contouring surgery. Dr. Pearce advises patients to maintain a stable weight for at least six months before undergoing liposuction to achieve optimal results. Significant weight changes can impact the outcome of the surgery.

When will I see the final results of my liposuction procedure?

The final contours from your liposuction procedure will become apparent after six months, allowing adequate time for the natural subsiding of swelling and skin contraction. You will wear a compression garment day and night for several weeks after the procedure. This compression garment will be pivotal in managing swelling and helping speed up how soon your results shine through. While visible changes in your physique will occur over the weeks following surgery, definitive results will only emerge at six months.

Do I need lymphatic massage after liposuction?

Dr. Pearce recommends a minimum of two lymphatic massage sessions for all patients who have had liposuction on their body, chest wall, or lower extremities. Including these sessions can help expedite the appearance of results. Patients can effectively manage smaller liposuction areas through gentle self-massage.
