Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery available, allowing women of all ages to attain larger breasts and more balanced figures.

Unfortunately, breast implants are not lifetime devices.

It is possible for complications to arise months or years after breast augmentation surgery, which prompts many women to undergo breast implant revision.

WHAT IS BREAST IMPLANT REVISION?

Breast implant revision is performed to replace damaged, old, or unwanted breast implants.

The goal of revision surgery is to change or enhance the appearance of the breasts by exchanging the implant itself.

WHAT CAUSES WOMEN TO NEED BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL SURGERY?

The techniques used during breast implant revision are personalized to the patient as the causes that lead to the operation vary on a case to case basis.

Women may choose to increase or decrease the implant size or change the shape and style of the implant.

Here are three situations that lead to breast implant revision:

1. RUPTURED IMPLANT

An implant ruptures or deflates when its shell develops a hole or tear. Implant rupture can happen in response to the normal aging of the implant or physical trauma experienced during or after the initial augmentation.

A ruptured saline implant will be noticeable immediately following the tear because the body absorbs the saline content. A ruptured silicone implant may not be realized until much later. This is why it is necessary to undergo routine MRIs or ultrasounds to verify the integrity of silicone implants.

2. CHANGE IN BREAST SIZE

Women seek breast augmentation surgery to enhance the size and shape of their breasts. While some women remain pleased with the chosen size and shape of their implant, others come to regret the specifics. Breast implant revision allows women to adjust the appearance of their augmented breasts (by switching out the old implant with a smaller or larger one) or remove their implants entirely.

3. CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE

Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue around the breast implant begins to harden and tighten around the implant. The condition can occur in one or both breasts and make the bustline look misproportioned. It can also cause severe pain and discomfort.
