How Is a Facelift Performed?

Depending on your individual needs, several types of facelifts should be considered. Some facelifts address the upper portion of the face, while others focus on the middle and lower. In addition, some procedures are a bit more invasive than others. Some of the more common facelift techniques include:

  • Full Facelift: Considered the gold standard, the full or “traditional” facelift involves incisions along the temples, extending down in front of the ears and back behind the ear into the hairline. We carefully pull and safely tighten the deeper layer of facial tissues, resulting in a lifted look and a notable reduction in excessive lines and wrinkles. A full facelift is an excellent option for individuals with advanced signs of aging. With this lift, many procedures may be combined, including upper or lower blepharoplasty to enhance the eyes or a neck lift for the lower region.
  • Mid-Facelift: The mid-facelift, or cheek lift, rejuvenates sagging features close to the cheekbones and upper jaw. This procedure is an excellent option for those seeking improvement in the middle to lower region of the face, which also includes the jowls.
  • Lower Facelift: A lower facelift improves the lower face and neck region, effectively addressing concerns like jowls and a sagging neckline. The incision length varies based on the tightening needed to address neck sagging.
  • Mini Facelift: This technique creates subtle, natural-looking improvements. During a mini facelift, a thin, small incision is carefully made near the ears to elevate the skin, enhancing mid- to lower-face features.

Facelift FAQs

Patients ideal for this procedure are in good overall health with aging-related sagging skin around the jowls, cheeks, or neck, seeking a more youthful and rested appearance. Individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure and active smokers are unsuitable candidates for a facelift. Uncontrolled blood pressure significantly elevates the risk of postoperative hematoma, a condition characterized by the accumulation of blood beneath the skin due to bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel after surgery. Smoking adversely affects the skin’s oxygen supply after surgery, increasing vulnerability to wound complications. Prospective facelift candidates must ensure proper blood pressure management and refrain from smoking six weeks before and after the surgery.

After surgery, ensure someone can stay with you for the first 1 – 2 days to assist with daily activities. Sleeping on your back is required for the first two weeks. A drain will remain present for 1 – 3 days post-op. Dr. Pearce will schedule an office visit the day after surgery to change your bandages and conduct a thorough assessment to ensure your recovery progresses smoothly. After the fresh dressings are applied, you can resume showering. The following office visit will be a week later to have your sutures removed. Swelling should only occur for the initial two weeks after surgery. After this period, you’ll see a more youthful version of yourself emerging.

After your facelift, you must refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 4 – 6 weeks.

Combine your facelift with a CO2 laser treatment to address sun damage, acne scars, age spots, melasma, and hyperpigmentation. A CO2 laser treatment can be performed simultaneously with the facelift or scheduled approximately six weeks after your procedure, depending on the condition of your skin.
