What Is an Eyebrow Lift?
Brow lift surgery, also called a browplasty or forehead lift, is a popular aesthetic treatment that helps create a lifted brow appearance, which offers a more youthful look to the top section of the face. A drooping brow can often cause a tired or angry appearance. This procedure surgically improves a drooping brow to give patients a rejuvenated look by removing excess skin from the forehead while raising the eyebrows. Dr. Paul Pearce, a plastic surgeon in Austin, TX, has completed browplasty on men and women to create a more youthful look. Injectable wrinkle relaxers and fillers are commonly used with a brow lift at Pearce Plastic Surgery for best results, creating a smoother and softer look.

How Is an Eyebrow Lift Performed?
Prior to surgery, anesthesia will be utilized. This can be done under general anesthesia or IV sedation based on the complexity of the surgery. The incision performed in a browplasty depends on the degree of sag, if the forehead is addressed, and the appearance of the patient’s hairline. Some of the many eyebrow lift approaches
Dr. Pearce offers:
- Coronal Brow Lift: The open brow lift, also known as the coronal brow lift, requires an incision behind the hairline, extending from ear to ear. This incision serves the dual purpose of concealing scarring and providing lift control during surgery. This procedure suits those with noticeable brow sagging or those seeking a lift for a low hairline. This technique is infrequently used since other less invasive approaches can provide comparable results.
- Trichophytic Brow Lift: A trichophytic incision permits significant brow lift for women and men without significant hairline recession risk. This procedure involves removing a small strip of forehead skin to lift the brows. The incision is made 1 – 2 mm behind the hairline and beveled for better scar concealment, allowing hair to grow back through the incision when it heals.
- Lateral Brow Lift: This method, also known as a temporal brow lift, begins with an incision inside the hairline just above the temples. A temporal incision allows the outer third of the brow to be lifted, effectively addressing the natural sagging of the outer brows due to aging. This sagging is responsible for the heavy appearance of the upper eyelid. This procedure can also help to smooth the appearance of Crow’s feet around the eyes.
- External Browpexy: This brow lift works well for those who need only a subtle lift. This procedure involves a small incision above the eyebrow and a permanent suture to achieve the desired lift. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.
- Trans-Blepharoplasty Brow Lift: During an upper eyelid lift, or upper blepharoplasty, a small incision releases the eyebrow position, and a small anchor containing a suture is used to elevate the brow.
- Non-surgical Brow Lift with BOTOX® or Jeaveau®: This technique offers a good option for those not ready for surgery or younger patients with early brow descent. Using an injectable neurotoxin weakens the muscles that pull the eyebrows down, resulting in temporary elevation of the brows that lasts around 3 – 4 months.

Recovery time after a brow lift varies depending on your specific procedure. There is little to no recovery time for chemical brow lifts, with most patients returning to regular activities the next day. Surgical brow lifts typically have bruising and swelling lasting about 7 – 10 days. Most patients can resume daily activities approximately two weeks post-op and strenuous activities — like gym workouts — about three weeks after surgery.
Not all brow lifts require general anesthesia. Depending on the type of brow lift you need, Dr. Pearce will discuss the options with you, prioritizing the best results and safety.
